Water: bisses (ancient water irrigation channels), lakes and dams for young and old |
|
In this - the sunniest part of Switzerland – water is life. The history of Sierre-Anniviers is undeniably associated with water. Originally, water had to be directed and channelled from the mountains towards the fields. Later on, man’s brilliance mastered the force of water that rushes down from our summits. Dams were built which let us produce electricity.
Oh! What bitter combat! |
This struggle made its mark on the countryside, in the form of bisses and dams that today offer visitors and tourists appealing activities.
Alongside our ‘bisses’ are quiet walkways which are ideal for leisurely outings with family or friends, in the shadows of larch and pine trees, or through vineyards.
At a higher altitude visitors can discover the emerald coloured waters of Moiry Dam – it’s wall stands 184m high and has a capacity of 78million m3.
The same water also gives us our lakes. In summer nothing will cool you down as much as a swim in Geronde Lake, or spending the evening having refreshments on the nearby terrace.
Less than 10km from Sierre in the village of St-Léonard you will find the biggest underground lake in the whole of Europe!
